This black and white likeness from a long-forgotten war,
Found amongst the sparse possessions of a fallen soldier,
whose untimely death added to the shameful score.
Mother, sister, wife or lover no one will ever know,
What tears of anguish fell,
When news arrived of a loved one,
Now in the earth below.
One can only hope
Time healed the painful wound,
And this woman learned to smile,
And accept her sorry tune.
