Positive Steps

PrintIt is reported that 1 in 5 people in Northern Ireland will experience mental illness so it makes good sense to take Positive Steps to promote and protect our own mental health.

Positive steps is an initiative devised by colleagues in the South Eastern Trust to help empower individuals to improve and protect their own and others mental health.

It is evidence-based (Friedli, Oliver, Tidyman and Ward 2007) and involves working through 10 steps to mental health improvement. The steps are:

  • Get Creative
  • Accepting Who You Are
  • Get Talking
  • Get Involved
  • Lifestyles
  • Try Something New
  • Asking for Help
  • Keeping Active
  • Keeping in Touch
  • Making Relaxation a Way of Life

The Positive Steps course will:

  • Enhance confidence & self-esteem of participants
  • Improve the mental health and emotional well-being of participants
  • Offer participants the opportunity to try something new, different & exciting
  • Help participants connect with family, friends & other supports
  • Encourage participants to acknowledge & talk about their feelings
  • Give practical solutions to learn how to manage emotions & learn how to relax

The Course will be informal, lots of fun and life-affirming
